WHAT WE DO

Our mission is to promote and improve early literacy in underserved communities.

Your donations help us provide:

  • Books to schools and community centers in under-served communities.

  • Informational materials geared toward adults about the importance of reading in the home.

  • Funding for our Free Little Library sponsorship program.

  • Funding for worldwide outreach for our Ambassador Program.

  • Small portion funds, administrative costs such as our website and tax obligations.

EARLY LITERACY FACTS

Children whose parents read them five books a day hear 1.4 million more words by the time they enter kindergarten than children who are not read to at all. Hearing more words before entering school, prepares them for seeing these words in print, which makes learning to read easier.

80% of preschool and after-school programs serving low-income populations have no age-appropriate books for their children.

One in six children who are not reading proficiently in the third grade do not graduate from high school on time, a rate four times greater than that for proficient readers. (rate is higher in children from low-income families and rural areas)

68% of America’s fourth graders read at a below proficient level, and 82% of those children are from low-income families
